Schwarzman Scholars (Tsinghua): How to Apply

Schwarzman Scholars is a fully funded, one-year master's program in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. It builds a network of future leaders who understand China's role in the world. There are two separate application tracks, the U.S./Global track and the China track, with different deadlines. The application is entirely online and late submissions are not accepted.

What it covers

  • Full tuition and fees for the one-year master's program
  • Room and board at Schwarzman College on Tsinghua's campus
  • A personal stipend for incidental expenses
  • Travel costs (one inbound and one outbound international flight)
  • A laptop (program-provided device) and academic materials
  • Access to the Schwarzman Scholars network of alumni and mentors

Eligibility

  • An undergraduate degree completed (conferred) by 1 August of the enrollment year
  • Aged at least 18 and not yet 29 as of 1 August of the enrollment year
  • English proficiency (native speaker, two+ years of English-taught study, or a qualifying test score)
  • No citizenship or nationality requirements (but China-track applicants apply via the separate China application and deadline)
  • Leadership potential and a strong academic record

Application — step by step

  1. 1

Confirm which application track applies to you

U.S./Global applicants (non-Chinese citizens) apply through the U.S./Global application by the September deadline. Applicants who hold passports or permanent-resident cards from Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Macao apply through the China application by the May deadline. Check the nationality rules carefully before you start.

  2. 2

Create an account and complete the online application

Create an account on the Schwarzman application portal (a PIN is emailed to activate it). The form collects personal information, a 100-word biographical profile, your resume/CV (two-page maximum), education and transcripts, English proficiency, up to two interests, and a one-minute video introduction (recommended, hosted as an unlisted YouTube/Vimeo link).

  3. 3

    Write the two essays

The application requires essays on your leadership and on why you are applying to Schwarzman Scholars (prompts are given in the application instructions), plus a reapplicant statement if you applied before.

  4. 4

    Arrange letters of recommendation

Provide the required letters of recommendation through the online system (prompt your recommenders before the deadline; they submit separately).

  5. 5

    Submit before the deadline

No late applications are accepted, even for latency or last-minute emergencies. For the Class of 2027-2028 the U.S./Global deadline is 9 September 2026 at 3:00 pm EDT; the China application closed 20 May 2026 (12:00 noon Beijing time).

  6. 6

    Interview and selection

Regional selection committees review applications and interview semifinalists (in person or virtually). Finalists are admitted to the class, and admitted students complete the visa process for China.

Typical documents needed

  • Online application form with personal and biographical information
  • Two-page resume / CV
  • Transcripts for each degree (with English translations where needed)
  • English proficiency evidence (test scores, or native/English-medium study)
  • Two essays and a reapplicant statement (if applicable)
  • Three letters of recommendation submitted online
  • Optional one-minute video introduction
