Marshall Scholarship (US to UK): How to Apply

The Marshall Scholarship funds up to 40 young Americans per year for graduate study (one or two years, or a three-year PhD pathway) at any UK university, deepening UK-US understanding. You cannot submit the application alone. It must be endorsed by the President, Provost, or Academic Dean of your US undergraduate institution, which submits it to the regional committee.

Administered by: The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission (UK), administered via the Marshall Scholarship program

What it covers

  • University fees (tuition) and college fees for the full duration
  • A monthly stipend to cover living costs
  • An allowance for books, and a thesis/research grant where relevant
  • A grant toward fares to and from the US at the start and end of the award
  • Contribution toward UK visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs
  • Access to the Marshall alumni network and summer events

Eligibility

  • US citizenship (at the time of application)
  • A US undergraduate degree, for the 2027 competition, awarded after April 2024
  • A competitive GPA (program guidance generally expects a minimum ~3.7 on a 4.0 scale)
  • Applying for graduate study at a UK university (any of the eligible pathways)
  • Not already studying for, or holding, a British degree or equivalent
  • Apply in only one region, and for only one of the one-year or two-year scholarships

Application — step by step

  1. 1

Contact your undergraduate institution's endorsing office early

The application must be endorsed and submitted by a designated staff member of your US undergraduate institution, signed by its President, Provost, or Academic Dean. Institutions set their own internal deadlines and may cap how many applications they endorse (no more than 24 overall per institution).

  2. 2

Complete the online application (ASAMS system)

Submit the Marshall online application, including your personal statements, course choices, and details of UK universities you wish to attend. Complete and submit it through the system to your institution by the applicant deadline.

  3. 3

    Arrange three letters of recommendation

Your recommenders submit their letters through the online system by the same applicant deadline. Choose referees who know you academically and personally.

  4. 4

    Your institution endorses and submits

If your institution elects to endorse you, it adds a letter of endorsement and submits the complete application to the appropriate regional committee by the endorsement deadline (for the 2027 competition: 29 September 2026 for applicants and recommenders; 1 October 2026 for institutional endorsement and submission).

  5. 5

    Regional review and interviews

Applications are reviewed at eight regional centers in the US. Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview (interviews typically run from early to mid-November).

  6. 6

Final selection and UK university offers

Final selection is announced shortly after the interviews. Offers are ultimately conditional on your being admitted to a UK university for the chosen course.

Typical documents needed

  • Online Marshall application form (ASAMS)
  • Personal statement(s) per the current competition guidance
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Letter of endorsement from your US undergraduate institution
  • Academic transcripts / degree evidence
  • List of proposed UK universities and courses
