IELTS vs TOEFL: What You Actually Need to Know
Written by Zain Aqdas, Founder and lead researcher, Scholarships AtlasPublished 14 August 2026
IELTS and TOEFL are the two most widely accepted English proficiency tests. IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking interview; TOEFL is fully computer-based. Most universities accept either, but minimum scores vary: many master's programmes ask for IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90. Some scholarships waive English tests entirely if your previous degree was taught in English. Check both the university and the scholarship requirements before booking a test. It can save you hundreds of dollars.
