Humboldt Research Fellowship (Germany): How to Apply

The Humboldt Research Fellowship sponsors postdoctoral and experienced researchers of all nationalities and research fields to conduct their own research in Germany, with a host at a German research institution of their choice. Applications are submitted online only to the Humboldt Foundation, and you cannot apply alone. You must first secure a host in Germany who provides a mentoring agreement, confirms research facilities, and uploads their own documents before the Foundation will forward your application.

Administered by: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Federal Republic of Germany)

Written by Zain Aqdas, Founder and lead researcher, Scholarships Atlas·Last updated 3 September 2026

What it covers

  • Monthly fellowship of EUR 3,000 (postdocs) or EUR 3,600 (experienced researchers), plus additional benefits
  • Flexible fellowship duration: 6-24 months for postdocs, 6-18 months for experienced researchers (each may be split into up to three stays within three years)
  • Intensive German language course before the research stay (you and your partner)
  • Family benefits for children and partners, subsidy toward private health insurance, and travel expense allowances
  • Hosts may apply for a subsidy toward research costs
  • Alumni sponsorship after the research stay, including return fellowships and later visits to Germany

Eligibility

  • Doctorate or equivalent completed within the last 4 years (postdocs) or within the last 12 years (experienced researchers, who must also hold a leadership role such as assistant professor, lecturer, or head of an independent research group)
  • Publications in internationally recognised journals/publishers (extensive publication record for experienced researchers)
  • Not a German national (German nationals abroad may apply under special long-residence conditions)
  • Not lived in Germany for more than 90 days in total within the 18 months before applying
  • Good knowledge of German or English (natural sciences and engineering); German required where needed for the research (humanities, social sciences, medicine)
  • Not previously sponsored directly by the Humboldt Foundation

Application — step by step

  1. 1

Find and secure a host in Germany

Choose a host at a German research institution who agrees to mentor your research. Your host provides a mentoring agreement, confirms research facilities are available, and later uploads a detailed statement and their documents through the application portal.

  2. 2

Wait for an open application call and create an account

The programme runs three application calls per year, each opening about eight months before the selection meeting (2026 calls: 15 March, 15 July, 15 November). Each call is capped at 800 applications. When the cap is reached, the call closes until the next round. Register and start your application only while a call is open.

  3. 3

    Prepare and upload your documents

Upload in the online form: curriculum vitae (2 pages max), research outline (5 pages max), complete list of publications, list of selected key publications with the key publications themselves, doctoral certificate, German language certificate (if required), and translations where needed.

  4. 4

    Arrange two expert reviews

Two expert reviewers (e.g. your doctoral supervisor plus another researcher, ideally outside your institute) upload their reviews personally into a protected area of the portal. Your application can only be submitted once these are uploaded while the portal is open.

  5. 5

Your host completes their part and you submit

Your host uploads their statement and confirmation of research facilities. Only after all documents are in place is the application forwarded to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

  6. 6

    Verification, peer review and selection

The Foundation verifies completeness (4-8 weeks), obtains peer reviews and reviews the application (approx. 3-6 months), and presents it to the selection committee (meetings in Feb/Mar, Jun/Jul, Oct/Nov). Around 20-25% of applications are approved. Decisions cannot be appealed, but you may reapply with a substantially improved application (a minimum 18-month wait applies after unanimous rejection).

Typical documents needed

  • Curriculum vitae (two pages maximum)
  • Research outline (five pages maximum)
  • Complete list of publications (per the Foundation's sample format)
  • List of selected key publications plus the key publications themselves
  • Doctoral certificate (or proof of imminent completion before the selection meeting)
  • German language certificate (where required)
  • Two expert reviews (uploaded by the reviewers)
  • Detailed statement of the German host and confirmation of research facilities
