Global Korea Scholarship (GKS): How to Apply

The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS, formerly KGSP) is the Korean government's main scholarship. It funds international students for Korean language training plus degree programs at designated Korean universities. You choose one of two mutually exclusive tracks, the Embassy Track (apply through the Korean Embassy in your home country) or the University Track (apply directly to a GKS-designated Korean university). Every applicant goes through a two-stage selection process.

Administered by: The Korean Government, administered by NIIED (National Institute for International Education)

Written by Zain Aqdas, Founder and lead researcher, Scholarships Atlas·Last updated 3 September 2026

What it covers

  • Round-trip economy airfare
  • Korean language training (one year) before the degree program
  • Full tuition for the degree program (associate, bachelor's, master's or doctoral)
  • Monthly study allowance (amounts set per level, published by NIIED)
  • Settlement allowance on arrival and medical insurance
  • Access to GKS alumni activities and the Korean government scholarship network

Eligibility

  • Applicant and both parents must hold non-Korean citizenship
  • Undergraduate: under 25 years of age; high school graduate; cumulative GPA of 80% or higher in the most recent program
  • Graduate: under 40 years of age; a bachelor's degree (master's applicants) or master's degree (doctoral applicants); average GPA of at least 80% in the most recent program
  • Good health (physical/mental) for study in Korea
  • No previous degree from a Korean university (per program rules)

Application — step by step

  1. 1

Choose your track: Embassy or University

Decide which of the two tracks you qualify for and prefer. Embassy Track: apply through the Korean Embassy in your home country (online via studyinkorea.go.kr). University Track: apply directly to one of the GKS-designated universities. You may apply through only one track.

  2. 2

Check the current call and eligible universities

NIIED publishes the annual GKS notice with the application period (for 2026: graduate applications Feb-March, undergraduate Sept-October), the list of Type A and Type B universities, and quotas. Embassy Track applicants choose up to three universities and must include at least one Type B university.

  3. 3

    Prepare your documents

Assemble the GKS application form, personal statement and study plan, degree certificates and transcripts, two letters of recommendation, proof of citizenship (applicant and parents), and a medical assessment form, exactly per the current call's checklist.

  4. 4

    Submit your application

Embassy Track: submit the online application through the Study in Korea website and complete any embassy-level requirements. University Track: submit your application and documents directly to the chosen GKS-designated university by its deadline.

  5. 5

    First and second stage selection

Every applicant passes two selection rounds: first the Embassy or University, then NIIED (with the university). Universities interview/assess candidates, and NIIED makes the final decision (results typically in June for graduate, December for undergraduate).

  6. 6

    Language training and enrollment

Selected scholars complete the pre-degree Korean language program and enroll in the assigned university degree program.

Typical documents needed

  • GKS application form (per the current call)
  • Personal statement and study plan
  • Degree certificates and academic transcripts
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of citizenship for the applicant and both parents
  • Medical assessment / health examination form
  • Passport copy
